Student loan rate hike: What you need to know

On July 1, the interest rates on student loans subsidized will double to 6.8%.

More than 7 million undergraduates have subsidized student loans, which means the federal government absorbs some of the interest rate for lower- and middle-income families based on financial need.

Subsidized student loan interest rates used to be 6.8%. But when Democrats took over the House in 2007, they passed phased-in cheaper rates for subsidized student loans. The rates fell to the current low of 3.4% for subsidized Stafford loans this past school year. The rates are scheduled to revert back to 6.8% for the 2012-2013 school year.


Man arrested on suspicion of killing Marine’s wife

A U.S. Marine was arrested, April 24, on suspicion of murder.

According to authorities, Staff Sgt. Luis Ray Perez, 45, was the last person seen with Brittany Killgore, 22.

“We believe he knows more than what he initially told us,” Sheriff’s Capt. Duncan Fraser said at the time. “We do not believe he is being cooperative with us.”

Killgore had recently filed for divorce from her husband, Marine Lance Cpl. Cory Killgore, who was serving with an artillery unit in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province, investigators said. He was granted an emergency leave to return to the United States when he learned his wife was missing.

Dick Clark died a day after prostate surgery

Television star Dick Clark died from a heart attack just one day after having surgery.

According to a death certificate obtained by CNN, acute myocardial infarction and coronary artery disease as the causes of death.

“Having surgery is a stressful event,” says Dr. Kenneth Rosenfield, an interventional cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. “It might have been enough to tip him over.”

Argentine ‘miracle’ baby found alive after death declaration

An Argentina baby was found alive in a morgue 10 hours after being declared dead.

Luz Milagros Veron was prematurely born weighing only 1 pounds 12 ounces. After being declared dead her body was sent to the morgue where she stayed in a cold refrigerator for 10 hours.

The mother went to visit her and discovered she was alive. The baby is in stable condition but in intensive care.

Doctors at this time cannot explain what happened.

Charles Manson denied parole, with next parole hearing set for 2027

Charles Manson, 77, who is serving a life sentence for nine murders, was denied parole April 11.

“He does not deserve to be returned to society,” the prosecutor added. “He has a history of refusing to cooperate, not only with psychologists for evaluations, but also for treatment.”

Manson said in an interview in November 2011, “I have put five people in the grave. … I’m a very dangerous man.”

Manson’s next parole hearing is scheduled for 15 years from now which he will be 92 years old. He is currently being held in isolation after being caught with a weapon in October.
