Vermont’s governor Peter Shumlin made a speech about the state of Rhode Island’s path towards marriage equality. He encouraged people to vote in favor of homosexual marriage rights, following the example of his state Vermont.  The group, Marriage Equality Rhode Island invited Governor Shumlin to speak at an arranged press conference on Thursday March 31 in Providence, Rhode Island. Governor Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island was present at this speech.

“Rhode Island has an opportunity to join their neighboring states in what I call the last civil rights struggle in America, to stand up on the right side of history for all families who want to declare their love for each other for the rest of their lives.” said Governor Shumlin.

Vermont was the first state to allow civil unions among homosexuals. The Governor of Rhode Island believes creating marriage equality in his state will make it a better place to live.
